Do the MBA?

Frankly, I have plenty on my plate at the present. I shouldn’t be looking for any more items to add to my todo list… and yet somehow I am still finding myself pouring over MBA programs looking for just the right one. Yes, the lure of the MBA is strong.

I wanted to go the business route at the beginning of my ‘college career’, but thankfully I was aswaged by a dedicated father who seemed to see the end of the road better than I could. So, I buried the notion of a business degree and sat instead with the engineering kids. It was a bumpy ride, probably because I still wasn’t convinced that I really wanted a Computer Engineering degree. After all, I hated circuits classes, micro-controllers, and every other thing that dealt with hardware. But then, I found a love for the software-side… and undergraduate life was buttery-good.

After a longer-than-average tour of duty as an undergraduate student, I held tight to my degree, lowered my head, and plunged into the workforce. Almost immediately I began looking at graduate study programs. I went to my then-manager Gary Shoemake and asked his advice about further education. It was the classic question again: “Business Degree or Technical”. He gave managerly advice and said as far as the company was concerned I was more valuable if I went the technical route first and I could always do the business thing later. It was good advice.

So, here I sit today (two jobs later) with one advanced degree in hand… which should be good enough for most people. But somehow I’m still drawn to the notion of getting that elusive MBA. I could do the 30 books thing… hmm. Maybe I’ll do both.

** Update: I found this paper a while back. Haven’t had much chance to dig in.. but definitely will before too long… so far, it looks enlightening.
